Astell&Kern SP3000M review: flagship sound in a smaller body

The A&ultima SP3000M keeps the SP3000's AKM converter array and 130dB signal-to-noise ratio while shrinking the body by about a quarter and halving the weight.

There is no other brand quite like Astell&Kern. Its players tend to balance looks, ownership, features and sound in a way that leaves an impression long after the music stops, and the A&ultima line has always carried that character. The one complaint that followed the SP3000 was never about any of it. It was about size. For smaller hands, and for anyone who wanted a flagship in a coat pocket rather than a bag, the previous player was a little too much of a good thing.

Three generations of refinement have brought the A&ultima line a long way, and the SP3000M is the one that finally answers the size question without touching the sound. The smaller body also solves the other half of the problem, since the weight is now evenly spread in the hand rather than pooling to one side. It is the most comfortable flagship the company has made, and it does that without losing the settled, expensive feel that defines the range.

A flagship you can carry

The 4.1-inch front panel is smooth to the touch and the interface keeps pace with it; lists and album art move without hesitation, whether you are scrolling a playlist on a train or streaming from the sofa. It is not a full-screen design, and that is the only thing worth noting, but the information it shows and the way it responds make everyday use easy to like. The glass back sits against a matte body, and the combination of a cool, translucent surface and a warm, grainy one gives the player a quiet sense of occasion.

The official leather case is a better answer than most. Soft, close-fitting and neatly stitched, it wraps the corners without adding much thickness, improves grip, and keeps the body clear of keys and coins in a bag. If the edge of machined metal against your hand has ever been a small irritation, the case removes it entirely.

What changed from the SP3000

The differences from the previous flagship are easy to list. The chassis moves from stainless steel to aluminium, which does most of the work in a body that is roughly a quarter smaller and about half the weight. The battery drops from 5,050mAh to 4,200mAh, which still means around eight hours with the screen off, or less if, like me, you prefer to keep the cover art lit while you listen. For small hands and a daily commute, the change is worth more than the numbers suggest.

The smaller body also brings a small change to the connections. The 2.5mm balanced output has gone, leaving the two plugs most people actually use: 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced. The power button sits on the top edge, playback controls are on the left, and the knurled wheel remains on the right, as smooth as it has ever been. Volume, track and pause are a couple of movements away, and blind operation with one hand becomes second nature.

Astell&Kern’s build quality has never been in question, and it holds here. Panel gaps are tight, the buttons have no looseness, and the wheel answers with a soft, precise click that is oddly satisfying to turn for no reason at all.

The sound is unchanged, and that is the point

The obvious worry with a smaller flagship is that something has been quietly given up. It has not. The SP3000M carries the same converter array as its predecessor, twin AK4191EQ modulators feeding four AK4499EX DACs, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 130dB. The sound is unmistakably Astell&Kern: neutral, easy to live with and never exaggerated, a touch of the force held back rather than pushed forward. What can read as a lack of drive at first is really the house character, and over a long evening it is the reason the player stays comfortable rather than tiring.

The stage is wide and the player is good at showing what each earphone does best. Pop has accuracy and energy, and voices carry their phrasing and feeling. Strings and small ensembles play to its strengths, with a light, flowing musicality that is particular to the brand, and electronic music arrives cleanly, each note placed without smearing, against a very black background.

With such a capable converter, DAR (Digital Audio Remaster) gives ordinary files an audible lift, though purists will leave it off in favour of the original. USB DAC, streaming, Roon Ready and the various digital filters are all present and all useful; they are the features I reach for daily, even if I would usually rather hold the SP3000M than dock it.

Portability is the real story

In the end, what makes the SP3000M easy to love is simply that it goes everywhere. At 237g it disappears into a small summer bag, and it slips into a pocket beside a favourite pair of earphones or a full-size headphone. The difference is measured in use rather than specification: a player you can carry without thinking is a player you turn to more often. Picture a warm evening, a song you suddenly want to hear, and the player already in your pocket, cutting the noise of the street away in the space of one plug.

Verdict

For me the SP3000M is the most balanced portable player in the A&ultima range. It holds sound, size, controls and the quiet pleasure of owning a well-made object in the same frame, which is rarely true of a flagship. Small and highly capable are not usually found together, and the SP3000M takes that idea one clear step further.

Top Audio verdict

9.0 / 10

The SP3000M is the most balanced player in the A&ultima range: the SP3000's converter stack and its calm, wide sound, in a body small enough to forget. It trades a little battery life for a great deal of ergonomics, and that is the right trade.
