DUNU LUNA review: the open-ear clip-on that finally has bass

A featherweight open-ear design with unusually full low frequencies, stable comfort and a natural place in everyday life.

Open-ear headphones are appealing because they leave the ear canal clear, but the design usually comes with compromises: sound leakage, weak bass, unstable fit or too much weight. DUNU’s LUNA addresses all four with a lightweight C-bridge structure, a directional acoustic outlet and an 11mm LCP dynamic driver.

Light enough to forget

The charging case has a shell-like shape that sits naturally in the palm and includes a flat base, so it can stand on a desk rather than rolling onto its side. The pearl-white finish on this sample is smooth and finely moulded, with a subtle sparkle that changes under different light. The lid opens easily with one hand and has just the right amount of resistance.

Each earbud weighs only 4.5g. The driver and battery sit at opposite ends of a high-elasticity titanium bridge, spreading the weight across the cartilage rather than concentrating it in one spot. Unlike many ear-hook designs, the C-bridge does not interfere with glasses or sunglasses.

The fit is exceptionally unobtrusive. It is easy to wear the LUNA for a full working day without the fatigue that often arrives after two or three hours with a sealed IEM. The bridge also stays secure during walking and exercise.

An open-ear design with real low end

An open shell cannot create the sealed air volume that normally supports bass, so most open-ear products sound light in the lower registers. The LUNA is different. Even with moderate environmental noise, 30 percent volume creates a satisfying foundation.

Two design decisions help. The sound outlet is shaped and angled to direct more energy toward the ear, while the 11mm LCP composite diaphragm offers high rigidity, useful damping and quick transient response. The resulting sound is full, clean and elastic rather than loose.

Bass has enough weight to give pop and electronic music a convincing pulse. Dense drum patterns remain well defined, while synthesised sounds retain shape and natural decay. The midrange has an airy sense of vocal body rather than the close, sealed intimacy of an IEM. Adele, Sam Smith and Teddy Swims retain presence and emotional force, and voices sit comfortably in front of the instruments.

Treble is smooth and forgiving. Bright female vocals in K-pop and J-pop lose some of their sharpest edges, making the LUNA easy to listen to for long periods. Very high percussion is audible but softer than it would be through an in-ear monitor. Classical recordings have a natural stage and convincing instrument colour, though the reduced extreme-frequency energy limits ultimate dynamic scale.

A genuinely useful daily headphone

For running and fast walking, the LUNA avoids the internal footfall thump that sealed earphones can create. Sweat is also less of a concern because the ear canal remains open. In a noisy gym, however, a sealed ANC earphone will still provide more isolation.

On the street, the LUNA lets traffic and nearby voices remain audible, which is valuable for crossing roads and cycling. The app’s outdoor mode adds linear gain without changing the basic frequency balance, making music clearer in busy surroundings without simply turning up every part of the signal.

Two microphones and AI voice-noise reduction keep calls intelligible at normal speaking volume. The app allows custom tap controls and includes a low-latency game mode, although the latter uses more power and is less important for ordinary video.

Leakage is reasonable at everyday listening levels. At around 30 percent volume, placing the LUNA on a desk made its music difficult to identify from roughly 40cm away. Battery life is close to the rated eight hours when using AAC. LDAC uses more power but can provide a higher-quality connection when the phone supports it.

Bluetooth 5.4 remained stable through a wall at normal indoor distances. A thoughtful detail is blind placement: if the left earbud is put into the right side of the case, the LUNA automatically resets the channel assignment so the next pickup still matches the ear.

The open-ear design to try first

The LUNA does not turn open-ear headphones into sealed monitors. It still gives up some extreme bass, isolation and top-end sparkle. What it does offer is more important for daily life: extraordinary lightness, secure comfort, natural environmental awareness and bass that no longer feels like an afterthought.

For commuting, office work, walking and exercise, it is one of the most complete open-ear designs available in its class.

8.7 / 10

The LUNA delivers the comfort and environmental awareness expected from an open-ear design, but with far more bass, stability and everyday polish than most of its rivals.
