HiBy R3Pro II review: small enough to carry everywhere
A pocket-sized player with a 4,000mAh battery, balanced output and an easygoing sound that makes portable listening refreshingly simple.

Portable digital audio players have become more powerful, but they have also become larger and heavier. Some no longer fit comfortably in a pocket. The HiBy R3Pro II makes a persuasive case for the small-player format: it is genuinely portable, yet it still offers enough power and flexibility for serious listening.

A pocket-friendly design
The R3Pro II keeps the footprint of its predecessor but adds a little thickness, giving it a pleasantly solid feel. Black and silver versions use a finely frosted glass back that resists fingerprints. Orange and green versions use a Japanese Toray Ultrasuede-style back, adding grip and a more distinctive finish.
Its squared-off body has rounded corners and suits smaller hands particularly well. The power and playback controls sit on the right, while volume and the microSD slot are on the left. The 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs and USB-C port are placed along the bottom. HiBy includes a lanyard and a clear case, both useful additions for a player designed to leave the house.

Serious hardware in a small body
Two CS43198 DAC chips, four OPA1622 amplifier chips and dual low-phase-noise oscillators give the R3Pro II an ambitious specification. Its 4.4mm balanced output reaches 480mW at 32 ohms, enough for most in-ear monitors and many efficient headphones. The LETSHUOER DX1, for example, reached a satisfying level at roughly one-third of the volume range.
The player supports DSD256, PCM up to 384kHz/32-bit and MQA 8x. Bluetooth 5.1, Wi-Fi and support for cards up to 2TB make it easy to load a large library once and stop worrying about storage. HiBy OS is well suited to the 3.3-inch screen: swipe down for the control centre, swipe left for playback and use familiar gestures throughout. Once the button layout becomes familiar, blind operation is straightforward.

The R3Pro II is more than a local player. It can work as a USB DAC, stream over DLNA and AirPlay, access Tidal and Qobuz, and tune into internet radio.

Clean, slightly warm and broadly compatible
The sound is neutral with a gentle warmth. It is clean, reasonably dense and detailed without becoming analytical. Vocals sit clearly in the mix, with enough distance to preserve the shape of the recording rather than placing the singer directly against the listener.
Pop is a natural match. Taylor Swift’s vocal phrasing retains its emotional focus, while Celine Dion’s upper register remains sweet without becoming bright. Violins have a clear, finely drawn outline. Large-scale recordings lose a little weight compared with larger players, but separation remains good enough to follow individual instruments and their positions.

The staging is moderate rather than expansive, with a tuning that favours musical engagement over spectacle. Pairing the R3Pro II with a lively dynamic IEM such as the DX1 adds openness, body and atmosphere. It is an easy starter system: attractive, convenient and capable of handling pop, classical, soundtracks and electronic music without constant EQ adjustment.

The uncomplicated choice
The R3Pro II succeeds because it understands the point of a small player. It does not ask the listener to compromise on battery capacity, streaming or output power simply to gain a pocketable body. For anyone who finds modern high-end players too large, HiBy’s compact alternative is one of the more convincing ways to keep a serious music library close at hand.
