LETECIEL LISTEN review: a studio headphone with a softer side

A comfortable closed-back monitor with an anime-inspired design, easy drive requirements and a tuning that avoids the usual clinical chill.

Studio headphones are usually designed to look understated, durable and industrial. LETECIEL takes a different route with the LISTEN, pairing a conventional monitoring brief with anime-inspired artwork. The combination sounds unlikely, but the headphones are more practical and better built than their playful presentation might suggest.

A playful exterior, practical construction

The box depicts the brand’s character, Natsuzora Hoshimi, working at a mixing desk. The message is clear: these are closed-back headphones intended for home monitoring and mixing. The product name and branding could be easier to read on the current packaging, but the unboxing itself is straightforward.

Inside are the headphones, a soft pouch, cable, 3.5mm-to-6.35mm adapter and a selection of collectible cards. The headphones combine metal around the driver housings with plastic in the adjustable frame. This protects the most important part of the structure while keeping weight manageable. The character artwork and logo are laser-engraved, so they should hold up better than printed decoration.

Large foam ear cushions and a generously padded headband make the LISTEN comfortable without clamping too tightly. The custom leatherette pads remained manageable during an hour at 25°C, and the ear openings leave a little room for movement. Stitching is neat throughout. A small pressure-relief vent sits discreetly beneath the yoke and is invisible once the headphones are worn.

The yokes articulate through a wide range, adapting to different head shapes and folding inward to reduce storage space. The joints are flexible, but they are not designed to be twisted forcefully; the metal ear-cup shell and plastic multi-angle bracket make replacement of a damaged plastic part more practical than replacing the entire headphone.

The cable enters on the left, a sensible arrangement for most desk users who operate a mouse with the right hand. The supplied 1.5-metre cable uses 5N oxygen-free copper and a braided protective sleeve. It can develop a little twist during use, but laying it flat before coiling resolves the issue.

Balanced monitoring without the chill

The custom 50mm dynamic driver has a 32-ohm impedance, making the LISTEN easy to drive from a computer sound card, portable player or USB dongle. This is a deliberate departure from older studio models that often required high-voltage headphone amplifiers.

The closed-back design keeps sound leakage low, making the LISTEN suitable for shared rooms and workspaces. Its isolation also makes it easy to lose track of a conversation when music is playing, so remember that colleagues may need your attention.

The tuning is broadly balanced, with a modest lift in the bass for a little extra body. Bass quality is adequate rather than exceptional, but pop and retro electronic dance music gain an enjoyable sense of momentum. The presentation is fuller and more rounded than the dry, cool stereotype of a studio monitor.

Vocals are presented with restraint and moderate body. Different singers remain easy to distinguish, but classic Cantopop does not gain the dense, nostalgic warmth some listeners expect. Even Faye Wong’s recordings sound relatively composed. That is consistent with a monitor-oriented balance, although it makes the LISTEN less of a specialist vocal headphone.

Treble is the least prominent region. Female vocals lose some height and shimmer, but the restrained top end also reduces fatigue over long editing or listening sessions. Live recordings with bright cymbals are easier to tolerate than they are on more sharply tuned headphones.

Music and work

The LISTEN performs well with soundtracks and large arrangements, where dynamics and layering remain easy to follow. Transient speed is moderate, but the added bass body prevents the overall sound from becoming sterile. Electronic dance music is more satisfying here than on many traditional dry-sounding monitors.

Despite its monitoring label, the LISTEN is not aggressively analytical or cold. A slight warmth in the tuning makes it more forgiving and more enjoyable for general listening, while keeping the overall balance sensible enough for editing and everyday monitoring.

At 32 ohms and 111dB sensitivity, it reaches a normal listening level easily from portable sources. A more powerful player or headphone amplifier can improve dynamics and resolution, but the difference is modest in ordinary use. Moving back to a USB dongle did not make the headphones feel fundamentally compromised.
