Sennheiser Momentum 5 review: a wireless headphone built to last

Long battery life, user-replaceable cells and a warm, spacious sound make Sennheiser's latest Momentum a convincing everyday companion.

Sennheiser took its time with the Momentum 5. In a market where new wireless headphones arrive every few months, the long gap between generations is noticeable. It also makes the result feel considered. The Momentum 5 improves the design, sound, battery life, controls and noise cancelling without losing the easygoing character that made the range popular.

A cleaner, more confident design

The Momentum 5 has a simpler visual language than its predecessor. The integrated ear-cup shells, matching cushions and carefully finished fabric headband give it a more cohesive, premium feel. The Sennheiser logo now sits on a round brushed-metal disc rather than a square plastic badge, so it looks like part of the design instead of an applied label.

Controls are concentrated on the right ear cup. A physical button handles power and pairing, while the touch panel manages playback and ANC modes. Swipes and taps are joined by pinch and double-tap gestures for changing listening modes. The gestures feel natural after a short period of use, and the USB-C port, 3.5mm input and status light are all easy to find.

The soft-touch outer material feels warm and pleasant against the hand, while also resisting fingerprints and everyday dirt. The fabric-covered case is compact despite the fact that the headphones do not fold. Its elastic straps hold both the USB-C and 3.5mm cables securely, and a recessed section at the rear makes the case easier to grip.

The battery can be replaced

The most important practical change is the user-replaceable battery. Wireless headphones are often discarded not because their drivers have failed, but because the battery can no longer survive a normal day. Sennheiser addresses that problem directly.

Removing the left ear pad and a few screws exposes the battery compartment. Replace the cell with the correct part, reassemble the cup and the headphones are ready for another cycle of ownership. This is still uncommon among similarly priced competitors, and it gives the Momentum 5 a meaningful advantage beyond its launch specification.

Comfortable for long sessions

Both ear cups rotate through 180 degrees, allowing the headphones to lie flat on a desk and settle naturally around different ear angles. The headband has generous cushioning and avoids the concentrated pressure that can make some ANC models tiring.

The pads are soft and seal well. They can become warm in summer temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius, but in an air-conditioned room they remain comfortable. After more than two hours of watching a film, there was no significant pressure buildup. The clamp is secure enough for walking and commuting without feeling aggressive, placing the Momentum 5 near the top of its class for everyday comfort.

The 42mm dynamic drivers are the centre of the Momentum 5’s appeal. Instrument separation, fine texture and spatial scale are all convincing, but the tuning is deliberately warm rather than clinical. The Smart Control Plus app also provides extensive EQ adjustment if you want to move the balance in either direction.

Sennheiser is often associated with classical music, and the Momentum 5 handles a large acoustic recording with a broad, well-organised stage. Its bigger surprise is how naturally it suits popular music. Bass reaches deep and carries generous weight, while the midrange and treble remain clear even with ANC enabled. Many noise-cancelling headphones lose transparency when cancellation is switched on; the Momentum 5 largely avoids that veil.

Voices and instruments occupy a coherent space instead of crowding the centre. Dolby Atmos spatial audio adds a strong sense of envelopment to compatible mixes. On Hans Zimmer’s “Harvester Attack”, individual sections, instruments and electronic effects remain easy to follow while the overall presentation wraps around the listener.

The drivers need a little more volume than average before they fully open up. Around 25 percent above a typical listening level was enough in testing. With the default EQ, the low end is already generously tuned: pop, K-pop, EDM and film soundtracks gain atmosphere without requiring a bass-boost preset. The bass is especially effective in action films, where engine noise, impacts and environmental effects are placed convincingly across the sound field.

Classical music is not an afterthought. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92 has broad dynamics and a convincing sense of hall scale, particularly in the energetic fourth movement. The Momentum 5 favours enjoyment over strict neutrality, but its balance is versatile enough that most listeners will not need to reach for the EQ.

Noise cancelling that is finally convincing

Four microphones on each side give the Momentum 5 eight microphones for real-time noise-cancelling processing. The improvement over the previous generation is clear. Traffic, horns, construction noise and sudden high-frequency sounds are reduced to a manageable background rather than left to compete with the music.

The transparency mode sounds natural enough for conversations and public announcements. There is some evidence of microphone processing, but latency is effectively imperceptible. On a train, announcements remain easy to hear, which makes it less likely that an engrossing album will carry you past your stop.

Wind handling is also good in ordinary conditions. Even on exposed high-rise walks in moderate winds, there was no distracting whistle. Indoors, the combination of passive isolation and ANC removes much of the harshness from a vacuum cleaner, making it possible to listen comfortably while doing household chores.

Flexible connections and dependable endurance

The Momentum 5 ships with Bluetooth 5.4 and supports SBC, AAC, aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless. Multipoint connectivity allows two devices to remain connected at once, which is useful when moving between a phone and a laptop. Sennheiser says a future firmware update will add Bluetooth 6.0 support.

There are two wired options. The 3.5mm input works with laptops and traditional players, while USB-C audio turns the included charging cable into a low-latency digital connection. That is particularly useful for video editing, where ordinary Bluetooth latency can make aligning dialogue and music frustrating. USB-C mode opens the soundstage slightly, deepens the bass and preserves the Momentum 5’s overall voicing while revealing more detail.

Sennheiser rates battery life at 57 hours, and that figure proved realistic in everyday use. The exact charging interval depends on ANC, volume and connection mode, but battery anxiety is not part of the Momentum 5 experience.

Smart Control Plus makes the difference

The Sennheiser Smart Control Plus app is more than a setup utility. It controls EQ, firmware, Dolby Atmos, ANC and transparency levels, and it supports a personalised sound profile. ANC and transparency can each be adjusted from 0 to 100 rather than being limited to a few generic presets.

There are eight EQ presets, and each can be refined with an eight-band editor. If none of them fits, the personalisation tool plays short samples and builds a profile from your responses. The controls are clear enough that the app feels like an extension of the headphones rather than a hurdle between you and the music.

The long-term choice

The Momentum 5 is not simply a pleasant Bluetooth headphone. It is a well-rounded product designed to fit more parts of daily life: music, films, commuting, podcasts and low-latency wired work. Its warm and spacious sound is especially successful with popular music, while effective ANC, long battery life and a replaceable cell address the practical weaknesses of many wireless models.

There are competitors with slimmer cases, stronger isolation or more neutral tuning. Few combine sound quality, flexibility, comfort and maintainability this effectively. The Momentum 5 feels like a headphone you can keep using long after the novelty of its launch has disappeared.
